The Ōamaru Heritage Precinct is recognized as a Tohu Whenua, one of Aotearoa New Zealand's most significant heritage experiences.
Here, you can stroll through New Zealand’s best-preserved Victorian commercial streetscape, a remarkable collection of buildings carved from locally quarried Waitaki whitestone.
As a cornerstone of the Waitaki Whitestone UNESCO Global Geopark, the precinct showcases the unique relationship between our local geology and our built history. These structures stand as a testament to Ōamaru’s boom era, when it served as a vital port town responsible for sending the world’s first frozen meat exports across the globe.
Easily explored by foot, today the buildings are filled with galleries, shops, artisans, and delicious places to eat and drink.
