About

Discover the Secrets of an Ancient Sea

Located in the heart of Duntroon, just 30 minutes from Ōamaru, the Vanished World Centre is the gateway to the Waitaki Whitestone UNESCO Global Geopark. This interactive fossil centre reveals a time when the Waitaki region lay beneath a shallow sea, home to extraordinary marine life. From prehistoric whales and giant penguins to fossilised sharks, the centre offers a fascinating look at the "Vanished World" that existed 25 to 30 million years ago.

Near the museum are other fascinating attractions to explore: the Māori rock art site at Takiroa, the wonderful limestone outcrops of Elephant Rocks, and the whale fossils in the cliffs at Anatini (the location for Aslan’s Camp in the film of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe) – three of the Geopark’s best-known “geosites”.

A Hands-On Journey Through Time

The centre brings the prehistoric past to life for visitors of all ages:
