Along with the New Zealand’s premier Steampunk attraction, Steampunk HQ, Ōamaru also hosts the annual Steampunk NZ Festival, complete with fashion show, gala ball and even teapot racing! Yes, you did read that right – teapot racing!
The Steampunk NZ Festival started in 2009, when the League of Victorian Imagineers Steampunk exhibition ‘Tomorrow As It Used To Be’ exhibition was held at Ōamaru’s Forrester Gallery. Inspired by the creativity being celebrated, a ball and fashion show were added the next year.
From humble beginnings, the now annual Steampunk NZ Festival has evolved into three days of events, workshops and activities, suitable for locals, tourists and Steampunk enthusiasts.
