About
A Remarkable Ancient Landscape
The Ōmārama Clay Cliffs (Paritea) are one of the most striking natural wonders within the Waitaki Whitestone UNESCO Global Geopark. These towering, sharp pinnacles and deep ravines were formed over 20 million years ago from layers of silt and gravel deposited by ancient glacial rivers. A true "hidden gem" of the Waitaki Valley, the cliffs offer a surreal, moon-like landscape that is a must-see for photographers and nature lovers exploring the South Island.
Exploring the Ravines and Pinnacles
Wandering through the Clay Cliffs feels like stepping onto another planet. The dramatic formations change colour throughout the day, shifting from pale creams to deep oranges.
- Photography Tips: For the most dramatic shadows and vibrant colours, visit during the "Golden Hour" at sunrise or sunset.
- The "Secret" Ravines: Follow the walking tracks into the heart of the cliffs to find narrow slot canyons and towering spires that make for incredible "hero shots."
- Geological Wonder: Learn how the lifting of the Southern Alps and subsequent erosion created these unique formations over millions of years.
Planning Your Visit: Location & Access
The Clay Cliffs are located on private land, a short 15-minute drive from the Ōmārama township.
- Location: Turn onto Quailburn Road off SH8 (near Ōmārama), then follow the unsealed Henburn Road to the gate.
- Entry & Access: There is a small entry fee ($5 per car) payable via an honesty box at the gate. Please bring cash.
- Difficulty: The trail is a short but steady climb. Because the terrain is uneven and consists of loose scree and gravel, it is not suitable for those with mobility issues.
- Road Conditions: The access road is unsealed (gravel). While accessible by most standard vehicles, please drive carefully.
- Facilities: As this is a natural site on private land, there are no toilets or shops at the cliffs; we recommend using the facilities in Ōmārama before you arrive.
- Top Tip: The cliffs are particularly spectacular in the late afternoon sun when the orange and cream hues of the clay are at their most vibrant.
- Respect the Land: As this is private property, please stay on the marked tracks, obey all signage, and take all litter with you to help preserve this fragile geological wonder
