With a family-friendly zone for the kids, and a glamorous Grand Finale event to finish the weekend on a crescendo, the Harbour Street Jazz and Blues festival has something for everyone. Read our recommendations below to make the most out of your Waitaki weekend!

Eat, drink, and sleep

Whether you’re an active adventurer or a luxury lover, there’s plenty of accommodation options to suit your budget. Go luxe with five-star historic hotels such as Casa Nova House or Pen-y-bryn, or try a bed and breakfast not far from the precinct. If you’re keen to explore further afield, book in a glamping retreat with Valley Views, High Tree Chalets, Nest Treehouses or Sparrowhawk, or book into a campground for stunning lakeside views.

For those staying in Ōamaru, wander down to Thames St then Harbour Street for cafe, wine and dining options. If you’re out to catch the early buskers, brunch at Tees St, Harbour Street Collective and more before snacking on a famous pie from Badger and Mackerel. Indulge in delicious cheesy options at Whitestone Cheese Diner and Deli before booking a spot at Cucina, Criterion, or Del Mar Eatery for dinner. Pre-gig or post-gig drink options are aplenty too, with Victoria Lounge, Scott’s Brewery, Craftwork, and more offering craft beers, cocktails, and wine for a nightcap.

Family activities

Whether to simply relax or blow off some steam, head to the Steampunk Playground at Friendly Bay Reserve for the Harbour Street Jazz and Blues Festival designated family zone! Expect hands-on activities for kids and families, outdoor games, and the Jazz Art Zone, where kids can design their own jazz posters (the winning entry will be displayed at the festival!).

Don’t miss the Harbour Street Talent Quest, this year in collaboration with Jae Bedford School of Music. Watch aspiring musicians battle it out for a chance to win a $1500 recording session at Sublime Studio, as well as the jazz hands and air instrument contest!

Workshops and events

This year’s schedule offers a variety of workshops for all ages and skill levels. Sign up for swing dancing classes, vocal training sessions, and songwriting workshops, or become a master at playing lead guitar and using the effects pedal. These workshops are designed to be fun and educational, whether you're a beginner or an experienced musician.

For those ready to get their Gatsby on, the Grand Finale will close the festival on a high

note. Playing on an Old Hollywood theme, the glamourous evening is an exclusive, ticketed event for attendees aged 18 and over, complete with a luxurious sit-down dinner, cash bar and captivating entertainment ranging from a burlesque performance to a set from one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s top guitarists.
