Step back in time and immerse yourself in the Ōamaru Heritage Celebrations, an unforgettable Victorian-inspired celebration unlike anything else in New Zealand.

Celebrate the golden legacy of Ōamaru with this year’s theme, ‘Growing for Gold’, a nod to the town’s booming era of gold mining and more.  With over 120 events taking place between 14 – 17 November, get your friends and family together for a weekend of 19th century old-time fun and frivolity.

Stroll through beautifully preserved Victorian architecture, pan for gold, or watch dapper individuals take to the catwalk for the highly anticipated fashion shows. You’re invited to dress to the nines too!

Cheer on penny-farthing racers, feast your eyes on the Grand Parade, or play croquet at the Victorian Garden Party at the Public Gardens.

There’s plenty of evening options available too – don your top hats and petticoats for a night of Scottish dances at the Miner’s Hooley Ceilidh or join in an eclectic selection of simple group and partner dances at the Goldfields Gambol.

Solve a crime at the comedic murder mystery or waltz the night away in waistcoats and pearls at the Ōamaru Caledonian Society Annual Ball. With over 120 events, there’s something for everyone!

Eat

If you’re making a weekend of it, make the most of dining in Ōamaru. If you’re treating yourself to a slow and relaxed morning, grab some coffee and breakfast from the delicious cafe offerings down Harbour Street, Tees St, and Thames St, or if lunch is calling, Whitestone Cheese Diner & Deli or Del Mar Eatery are delicious.

Head inland through the Waitaki Valley to the beautiful River-T Wines Cellar Door. Enjoy drinks and a platter before heading back to town and cinching your corset, dousing yourself in pearls and getting your top hats ready for the nighttime events. If you need a costume, make sure to check out The Victorian Wardrobe prior. If dressing up isn’t your style, don’t worry – our fashionistas still need supporters to cheer them on.
