Are you heading south for the rugby?

The All Blacks are set to play their first game against England at Forsyth Barr Stadium this Saturday 9th July in Dunedin. With the game nearly sold out, there is no doubt lots of you are prepping for a road trip!

Make the roadie fun for everyone by pit stopping through Waitaki. Take a break, have a pie, and stretch the legs – you could even check out the little blue penguins and support local conservation on the way.

FEELING HUNGRY?

Arguably the most essential part of a road trip is where you stop for food.

Badger & Mackerel – Whether you want to grab a quick but delicious bite to eat or sit down and have a break, Badger & Mackerel has you covered with a full breakfast menu. This is a great place to stop if you are looking for somewhere that caters to your dietary needs too – with vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options available.

Rainbow Confectionery – pop by the Rainbow Confectionery factory and grab a bag of lolly offcuts to fuel the drive ahead. Browse the range of beloved sweets and buy a jumbo bag to share (or not!).

The Galley – Bask in the beautiful ocean views and enjoy a delicious meal of gourmet fish and chips or a hearty burger – then finish the meal off with a sweet treat. Check out their vegan and vegetarian options, too.

FEELING RESTLESS?

The kids are getting restless, and you need some fresh air. It’s time to stretch the legs.

Friendly Bay Steampunk Playground – Located next to The Galley, it’s the perfect place to burn some energy.  With the famous penny farthing swing, a pirate ship, a giant elephant and a flying fox (among other features), the playground is designed for kids of all ages – even for those who are a kid at heart.

Ōamaru Public Garden – Take a leisurely stroll around one of New Zealand’s oldest botanic gardens.  Take in the fresh perfumes that linger in the rose garden and admire New Zealand’s lush native plants. Don’t forget the Italian marble fountain located near the main entrance – it’s a great photo opportunity!

FEELING ADVENTUROUS?

Make the most of your drive and take the scenic route through the coastal town of Ōamaru.

Ōamaru Blue Penguin Colony – Take the family to one of the most spectacular sights in Ōamaru and see penguins in their natural environment. Day time tours are available anytime from 10am-4pm, with an evening viewing beginning at 5:15pm. As well as the penguins being a must-see on any trip down south, your visit directly supports conservation and research programmes.

Moeraki Boulders – Located 30 minutes south of Ōamaru the Moeraki Boulders are an absolute must-do. Placed on Koekohe Beach, scientists believe the boulders formed around 65 million years ago, while Māori legend has it that the boulders are gourds washed ashore from the great voyaging canoe Araiteuru when it was wrecked upon arrival hundreds of years ago.
