Make the most of the lower South Island with New Zealand’s exciting multi-region experience, the Southern Way – made easier with Air NZ’s multistep domestic flight itinerary.
Home to three airports, Queenstown, Dunedin and Invercargill, book multiple stops across one booking so there’s no limit to what you can explore. From Waitaki in the north, to Stewart Island in the south, and from the Tasman Sea to the Pacific Ocean, the Southern Way offers adventure around every corner.
Follow the Southern Way’s 3-day itinerary that traverses land from Dunedin to Waitaki to the fringes of Mackenzie Country. First, fly to Dunedin with AirNZ and pick up your one-way rental car. Explore the coast of Dunedin and Moeraki Boulders before driving ninety minutes to the heart of the Waitaki region; Ōamaru. On the way, stop off for steampunk and the Ōamaru Blue Penguin Colony, before driving up the Waitaki Valley and exploring wineries, limestone, and the impressive Waitaki Whitestone Aspiring Geopark.
From here, drive to Ōmarama and soak in the hot pools, before linking up with the road to the Lindis Pass, where Wanaka and Queenstown lie beyond. Don’t forget to book your accommodation – Waitaki has a great selection of boutique hotels, glamping experiences, campgrounds, and B&Bs.
The Southern Way is full of inspiration for your Waitaki adventure – check out their itinerary here!
With AirNZ, it’s easy to fly to one airport and out of another – fly to Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown, or Invercargill. For international travelers, Queenstown or Christchurch is your best gateway to exploring the South Island.
If you’re exploring by car, follow a State Highway to discover Wanaka and Queenstown, Fiordland, The Catlins, Invercargill, and Gore. Take the main roads or spend a bit longer navigating the ones less travelled – the options are endless!
