Ohau is a remote holiday hideaway, gateway to Lake Ohau, numerous walking tracks, the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail and the Ohau Snow Fields. Turn onto Lake Ohau Road which is about half-way between Twizel and Omarama on State Highway 85.
The journey into Ohau is stunning itself. The mountains, hills and surrounds are a canvas of warm hues synonymous with the high-country of the South Island. The prominent hill standing watch over the other side of Lake Ohau, identifiable by its scree scars, is Ben Ohau. Visitors can walking up Ben Ohau, around the lakeshore or tackle more challenging hikes into the hills.
For the snow bunnies, the ski field not only offers stunning mountain and lake vistas but being a smaller ski field, provides a wonderful community atmosphere up the hill with all necessary services and provisions.
At the foot of the hills, Lake Ohau Lodge has spectacular views of the lake and mountains and is a great place to stay and socialise. Alternatively, there are a number of campgrounds around Lake Ohau or the cosy, modern lodge-style option at Lake Ohau Quarters which is also the gateway to the Hopkins Valley.
Lake Ohau Lodge is also the end of section 3 of the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail and the beginning of section 4 to Omarama. Section 3 has some fantastic riding along the shore of Lake Ohau and is a favourite section of many! During section 4 of the trail cyclists will tackle the highest point. Though there are a few bumps, rocky areas, false summits and patches of mud to navigate, cyclists will be rewarded with fantastic views at the high-point and a sweet downhill to Quailburn Road.
