Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail
The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail showcases New Zealand's stunning natural landscapes - from our highest mountains, past great lakes and rivers, and down to the ocean. Suitable for all ages, the 9 section bike trail is an easy to intermediate grade, linking the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean.
Ski & Snowboard
Hit the slopes and go skiing or snowboarding at Ohau Snow Fields or Awakino.
There are plenty of other mountain biking trails in addition to the A2O. Herbert Forest has some great tracks, or have a ride along the Cape Wanbrow trails.
- Other cycling
We have a number of suggested cycling routes scattered around our district. These are unformed, unmarked and in some cases require riding on the state highways but are great ways to see and experience rural Waitaki.

There are excellent fishing options district-wide. The Ahuriri River is renowned for trout fishing; home to both brown and rainbow trout or put on your sea legs and jump on a fishing charter at Moeraki - an excellent opportunity for not just fishing, but sightseeing and wildlife viewing too!
Coastal North Otago has some great breaks - if you can brave the cold water. Just throw on your wetsuit and you're good to go! Kakanui is a popular spot, and surfers have been known to get out past near the Shag Point turn off.
The Waitaki Lakes are a haven for water-sports and you'll find plenty of lovely swimming spots. Alternatively, the Waitaki Aquatic Centre is a great indoor swimming option for the whole family.
The beauty of New Zealand is that your never far from the sea - a sea rich in marine life. Those tough enough to get in cold waters will reap the rewards! Seafood aplenty, locals often dive around Shag Point and Moeraki.

These lakes are very popular over summer with holiday makers. Check out the local campgrounds and get on water for a bit fun! Popular with anglers, boaties, water skiers, wake boarders, kayakers, jet skiers and swimmers.
